Question: Question: Why do I sneeze?
Answer: Sneezing is a reflex. There is an irritation to a sensory nerve in the nose leading to a spasmodic inspiration of air into the lungs. The glottis (opening to the windpipe) closes leading to a high air pressure in the lung. With opening of the glottis, a blast of air escapes through the nose and mouth to clear the nasal passage. This reflex can be initiated by viruses, irritants, allergens, and exposure to bright sunlight. |
